INDIA|SEPTEMBER 7,2025|SKY LINK TIMES|
Skywatchers across India are in for a celestial treat tonight, September 7, 2025, as the longest total lunar eclipse since 2022 lights up the night sky. Popularly called a “Blood Moon”, the rare event will be visible in its entirety from all parts of India — the first such occurrence since July 27, 2018.

According to astronomers, the total eclipse phase will begin at 11:01 pm on September 7 and last for 82 minutes, making it a spectacle worth staying up for. The partial phase will end at 1:26 am, and the eclipse will conclude at 2:25 am on September 8.
What Makes This Lunar Eclipse Special?
Unlike solar eclipses, which require protective gear, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. The moon appears in a dramatic copper-red hue during the total phase, earning it the nickname “Blood Moon.”
“This striking color happens because red sunlight bends through Earth’s thin atmosphere and illuminates the moon, while the blue light scatters away,” explained B.S. Shylaja, former director at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium.

Why Don’t We See Eclipses Every Month?
Eclipses are rare because the moon’s orbit is tilted about 5 degrees relative to Earth’s path around the sun. “A lunar eclipse occurs only when the Earth, Sun, and Moon align perfectly, casting Earth’s shadow on the moon,” noted Divya Oberoi, chair of the Public Outreach and Education Committee (POEC) of the Astronomical Society of India.
When is the Next Total Lunar Eclipse?
If you miss tonight’s “Blood Moon,” you’ll have to wait until December 31, 2028, for the next total lunar eclipse fully visible from India.
Public Viewing & Live Streams
Several astronomy clubs, science institutions, and planetariums across India are hosting public viewing sessions with telescopes. Many organizations will also stream the event live online for those unable to step outdoors.
