KBC’s Independence Day special featuring Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and Commander Prerna Deosthalee has stirred controversy, with critics alleging political use of armed forces.

The Independence Day special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is making headlines ahead of its August 15 telecast, as it features three distinguished officers from India’s armed forces — Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, both key figures in Operation Sindoor, alongside Indian Navy’s Commander Prerna Deosthalee.
While many viewers welcomed the tribute to the armed forces, the show’s latest promo has sparked a heated discussion online. Critics accused the government and showrunners of using the military for political narratives, particularly so soon after a sensitive counter-terrorism operation.
In the promo shared on KBC’s official social media handles, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is heard saying,
“Pakistan ye karta chala aa raha hai. Toh jawab dena banta tha sir. Isiliye Operation Sindoor ko plan kiya gaya.”
(“Pakistan has been doing this for long. It was necessary to respond, sir. That’s why Operation Sindoor was planned.”)

The episode will reportedly touch upon the strategic and emotional aspects of Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
Supporters of the episode see it as a fitting Independence Day tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces. However, detractors question the timing and appropriateness of showcasing active officers on a popular quiz show, arguing that it blurs the lines between military service and entertainment media.
Hosted by veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, the Independence Day special is expected to draw high viewership — and possibly more debate — when it airs on Thursday.
