According to senior police officials, Jagir Miah has been booked under multiple stringent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including Sections 143, 147, 148, 149, 150, 152 and 113(5), which relate to unlawful assembly, rioting, and acts endangering public order.
In addition, the accused faces serious charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, including Sections 10, 13, 16, 38, 39 and 40, covering membership, support, funding, and participation in terrorist activities.
Links to JMB Offshoot Under Probe
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Jagir Miah is allegedly an active member of “Imam Mahamude Kafila”, an organisation described by investigators as an ideological offshoot of the banned Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
JMB is a proscribed terrorist organisation with a long history of extremist activities in Bangladesh and alleged cross-border linkages in parts of India. Security agencies believe that such offshoot groups are often used to radicalise, recruit, and indoctrinate local youth while avoiding direct association with banned outfits.
Officials said the arrested individual was under surveillance for some time due to suspected extremist activities and associations.
