The Israeli military announced plans to relocate civilians from northern Gaza to the south beginning Sunday, ahead of a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City. Officials confirmed that residents will be provided with tents and shelter equipment, delivered through the Kerem Shalom crossing with assistance from the United Nations and international relief groups.

The move follows Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement that Gaza City — described as Hamas’ last stronghold — will be targeted only after civilians are evacuated to “safe zones.”
However, United Nations officials expressed concern that relocating residents to southern Gaza could intensify humanitarian suffering, noting that “no place in Gaza is safe.” Still, the UN welcomed Israel’s decision to allow much-needed shelter equipment into the enclave, saying it will work with partners to maximize aid delivery.
Over the past week, Israeli forces have stepped up operations on the outskirts of Gaza City, particularly in the Zeitoun and Shejaia neighborhoods, where residents reported intense tank shelling and aerial strikes. The military confirmed a new operation in Zeitoun aimed at locating explosives, destroying tunnels, and targeting militants.

Meanwhile, protests are expected across Israel on Sunday demanding a hostage release deal and a ceasefire. Negotiations for a U.S.-backed 60-day truce remain stalled, though Egypt and Qatar continue mediation efforts.
The conflict, which began after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 that killed 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages, has since claimed over 61,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza health officials. The war has left much of Gaza in ruins and internally displaced the majority of its 2.2 million residents.
