In a strong regulatory action amid continued flight disruptions, the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Saturday directed IndiGo Airlines to complete all pending passenger refunds by 8 PM on Sunday, December 7. The directive comes as the airline faced its fifth consecutive day of operational disruption, with 405 domestic flights cancelled so far.

In an official statement, the Ministry said that the refund process for every cancelled or disrupted flight must be fully completed within the given deadline. It also warned that any delay or non-compliance in refund processing will invite immediate regulatory action.

No Rescheduling Charges for Affected Passengers

To protect passenger interests, the Ministry has also directed IndiGo not to levy any rescheduling charges on passengers whose travel plans were affected due to cancellations.

Airlines have also been instructed not to impose rescheduling fees for affected passengers,” the statement said, ensuring financial relief to travellers already inconvenienced by repeated disruptions.

Government Orders Baggage Delivery Within 48 Hours

Taking a serious view of baggage handling issues, the Centre has also instructed IndiGo to trace and deliver baggage that got separated from passengers within the next 48 hours.

The airline has been told to:

Maintain clear communication with passengers

Provide accurate tracking details

Ensure compensation wherever applicable under passenger rights regulations

Passengers should not be left in uncertainty regarding their belongings,” the Ministry added.

Dedicated Passenger Help Cells to Be Set Up

To ensure smooth grievance redressal, the government has directed IndiGo to establish dedicated passenger support and refund facilitation cells.

These special cells will:

Proactively contact affected passengers

Ensure quick processing of refunds

Arrange alternative travel without repeated follow-ups

The Ministry confirmed that automatic refund systems will remain operational until full operational normalcy is restored.

Special Focus on Vulnerable Passengers

The government has also emphasized special facilitation for senior citizens, differently-abled passengers, students, patients, and passengers requiring urgent travel.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation remains in continuous coordination with airlines, airports, security agencies, and all operational stakeholders to safeguard passenger rights during this period of disruption,” the statement said.

Operations Under Tight Watch

The government has reiterated its commitment to restoring complete flight operations at the earliest, while keeping IndiGo’s performance under close monitoring.

With thousands of passengers impacted nationwide, aviation authorities have made it clear that passenger rights, timely refunds, and service accountability will not be compromised.
