Lanza-N Radar,a historic milestone for India’s defence self-reliance journey, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has become the first Indian company to manufacture and commission advanced Naval 3D Air Surveillance Radars under a transfer of technology agreement with Spain’s defence technology leader Indra.

The system, called the Lanza-N Radar, has been successfully integrated and commissioned on an Indian Navy warship, marking a breakthrough in indigenous naval radar capability.

What is the Lanza-N Radar?
The Lanza-N is the naval version of Indra’s long-range 3D air surveillance radar, widely regarded as one of the most advanced systems in the world for air defence and anti-missile operations.
It is capable of detecting and tracking a wide range of aerial and maritime threats, including:
1.Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
2.Supersonic fighter jets
3.Anti-radiation missiles
4.Naval platforms
This marks the first time the Lanza-N system has been deployed outside Spain, making India the first country beyond Indra’s home base to operate it.
Commissioning and Local Production
According to TASL, the radar underwent extensive sea trials where it was tested against multiple naval and aerial platforms. After clearing all performance benchmarks, it was fully integrated with the Indian Navy’s warship systems.
To accelerate production, TASL has established a dedicated radar assembly, integration, and testing facility in Karnataka. This infrastructure ensures future deliveries of the radar for Indian Navy’s frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers.

Industry Leaders Speak
Sukaran Singh, CEO & MD of Tata Advanced Systems, emphasized that the achievement reflects a broader goal of strengthening India’s defence ecosystem.
> “Our collaboration with Indra underscores a shared commitment to building advanced radar systems in India. With local expertise, strong supply chains, and technology transfer, we are fostering a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem,” Singh said.
From Indra’s side, Ana Buendia, Head of the Naval Business Unit, highlighted the long-term vision of the partnership.
> “Together, we have established a radar factory in Bengaluru, giving us local support to produce systems more efficiently and provide closer service to the Indian Navy,” she noted.
A Boost for Atmanirbhar Bharat
The commissioning of the Lanza-N Radar represents a major boost to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative in defence technology. By assembling and integrating such sophisticated systems locally, India reduces its dependence on foreign suppliers while simultaneously upgrading its naval capabilities.
With more radars planned for future Navy vessels, this development strengthens India’s maritime security at a critical time when air defence and anti-missile readiness are top priorities.
