According to a statement from the Vice President’s Office, the meeting reflected on “the strong and enduring bonds between India-Mauritius” and explored ways to deepen collaboration across sectors including trade, security, and culture.

Strengthening Historical and Cultural Bonds

Vice President Radhakrishnan highlighted the time-tested relationship between India and Mauritius, describing it as one built on “trust, shared values, and historical connections.” The two nations have enjoyed close ties for decades, underpinned by a large Indian-origin community in Mauritius that continues to contribute to the island nation’s progress.

Earlier in the day, the Vice President addressed members of the Indian community in Seychelles, lauding their efforts in promoting goodwill and strengthening people-to-people connections. “The Indian diaspora plays a pivotal role in fortifying our relations with partner nations,” he said during his interaction.

Seychelles Visit and Vision MAHASAGAR

Radhakrishnan is currently on a two-day official visit to Seychelles to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Patrick Herminie. During the visit, he is expected to convey India’s congratulations and reaffirm its commitment to the Indian Ocean island nation.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted, “Seychelles is an important partner under India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and in our commitment to the Global South. The visit underscores India’s deep commitment to further strengthening and expanding its partnership with Seychelles.”

India’s bilateral engagement with Seychelles has long been anchored in historical ties and New Delhi’s continued support for the island nation’s maritime security and sustainable development goals.

Historic Ties with Seychelles

India and Seychelles share deep-rooted connections dating back to 1770, when a group of Indians first arrived on the islands. Over time, trade links encouraged the migration of Indian traders who played an important role in shaping Seychelles’ early economic landscape.

Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1976, following Seychelles’ independence. The INS Nilgiri represented India during the nation’s first Independence Day celebrations. India later opened its resident mission in Victoria in 1979, while Seychelles inaugurated its New Delhi mission in 2008, cementing a steady diplomatic presence on both sides.

Looking Ahead

The India-Mauritius (Radhakrishnan–Ramgoolam) meeting signals India’s strategic intent to reinforce ties with both Mauritius and Seychelles—key partners in the Indian Ocean region. As India continues to advance its maritime and diplomatic initiatives under Vision MAHASAGAR, the collaboration with Mauritius stands as a cornerstone of New Delhi’s outreach to the Global South.
