Agartala, August 2, 2025 – In a significant diplomatic development, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, arrived in Agartala on Friday for a three-day visit aimed at reviewing key bilateral issues between India and Bangladesh, particularly those concerning the northeastern state of Tripura.

This marks the first high-level visit from Dhaka to Tripura since the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in August last year. Since the change in political leadership under Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus, India-Bangladesh ties have seen increasing strain, particularly over border tensions, social media-driven hostility, and growing concerns over minority rights in Bangladesh.

Diplomatic observers view Hamidullah’s visit as an effort to ease tensions and reset dialogue at the regional level.

Reviving socio-cultural exchanges

Scheduled Meeting with Governor: On Sunday, the envoy is expected to meet Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu at Raj Bhavan.

The envoy will remain in the state until Monday, August 4.

Tripura shares an extensive border with Bangladesh and has historically played a key role in cross-border collaboration. The ongoing visit is being seen as a diplomatic attempt to de-escalate tensions and rebuild trust at the sub-national level, even as central relations remain turbulent.
