Technology giant Google on Thursday unveiled a comprehensive AI safety and digital protection roadmap for India, placing children, teenagers, and older adults at the heart of its latest initiatives. The announcements come as India’s digital economy rapidly expands, exposing millions to new online threats ranging from phone scams to AI-generated misinformation.

Real-Time Scam Detection Comes to Pixel Phones

One of Google’s biggest India-focused updates is a new on-device real-time scam detection tool, powered by Gemini Nano.
According to the company, the feature:

1.Analyses voice calls in real time

2.Flags suspicious or scam-like patterns

3.Works entirely on-device, without sending audio or transcripts to Google

4.Is off by default, and applies only to calls from unknown numbers

5.Plays a notification beep to alert call participants

Google emphasized privacy as a core principle, stressing that the tool operates locally on the device and can be switched off whenever the user chooses.

AI Watermarking to Fight Deepfakes & Misinformation

In another major step, the company expanded the availability of SynthID, its AI content identification technology. This includes:

1.Broader rollout of the SynthID Detector

2.Open-sourcing of the SynthID text watermarking tool as part of the Responsible GenAI Toolkit.

SynthID helps identify AI-generated images, audio, and text, a capability increasingly important as deepfakes surge across India’s digital platforms.

Grants for Cyber Safety & AI Research

Google also announced significant funding to strengthen India’s cyber defence and AI governance ecosystem.
Key funding commitments include:

1.₹1.6 crore ($200,000) grant to CyberPeace Foundation

This grant supports:

1.AI-driven tools to counter online fraud

2.Digital safety programmes for children and teens

3.Cybersecurity capacity building

4.Responsible AI governance aligned with the IndiaAI Mission.

5.$1 million research fund for APAC institutions

Five major think tanks and universities across the Asia-Pacific region will receive grants to study AI opportunities, risks, and societal impact—ensuring deeper academic engagement in shaping AI policy and development.

Speaking about the initiative, Evan Kotsovinos, Vice President of Privacy, Safety and Security at Google, said:
