Focus on Ukraine, Security, and Reconstruction
A major highlight of the discussions will be the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War. Ministers are expected to deliberate on reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, including nuclear safety, humanitarian demining, and funding mechanisms for rebuilding war-affected regions.
Institutions such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are likely to play a key role in mobilising investments for Ukraine’s recovery.
Maritime Security and Supply Chains in Focus
Another critical agenda item is maritime security, with discussions centered on ensuring freedom of navigation and safeguarding global trade routes. With rising geopolitical tensions impacting supply chains, the G7 aims to strengthen resilience and stability in international logistics networks.
These discussions are particularly relevant for countries like India, which rely heavily on secure maritime routes for trade and energy supplies.
Reforming Global Governance Systems
The meeting will also explore reforms in global governance frameworks. Leaders are expected to address “horizontal threats” such as cyber risks, geopolitical instability, and economic disruptions that challenge national sovereignty.
Officials have indicated that innovative approaches will be discussed to modernise multilateral systems and enhance global cooperation.

India’s Expanding Global Role
India’s participation, alongside other partner nations like South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and Ukraine, reflects the G7’s broader outreach strategy. Jaishankar is also expected to hold bilateral talks with counterparts on the sidelines, strengthening diplomatic ties and advancing India’s strategic interests.
The FMIM serves as a preparatory stage for the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit 2026, scheduled to take place in June. Outcomes from this meeting are likely to shape the agenda and priorities for world leaders.
Strategic Importance Ahead of G7 Summit
With sessions spanning global crises and long-term challenges, the meeting aims to produce actionable outcomes rather than just discussions. From Ukraine reconstruction to maritime security and governance reforms, the decisions taken here could have far-reaching implications.
As India continues to assert its influence on the global stage, Jaishankar’s participation underscores New Delhi’s commitment to contributing to international peace, stability, and development.
