According to police, the blaze erupted in the B-1 and M-2 AC coaches while the train was moving. Alert passengers noticed smoke and flames and immediately pulled the emergency chain, bringing the train to a halt at Yelamanchili station.
Railway staff promptly informed the fire department, following which four fire engines rushed to the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjacent coaches and a goods train running on a parallel track.
Both affected coaches were completely gutted, resulting in passengers losing all their luggage.

Anakapalli Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha confirmed that a dead body was recovered from the B-1 coach after the fire was brought under control.
The deceased has been identified as Chandrasekhar Sundaram (70), a resident of Vijayawada. Police said his family members have been informed.
“There were 82 passengers in the B-1 coach and 75 in the M-2 coach at the time of the incident. All passengers were evacuated safely, which helped avert a major disaster,” the SP told reporters.

Other delayed trains included Puri–Tirupati, Shalimar–Cherlapalli, Visakhapatnam–Lingampalli, and Visakhapatnam–Guntur. However, trains not scheduled to stop at Yelamanchili were reported to be running on time.
