Celebration Begins at Dhakeshwari Temple

The festival commenced with the unveiling of Goddess Durga’s face at the Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka, one of the most revered puja venues in Bangladesh. Thousands of devotees gathered to perform rituals, light lamps, and offer prayers.

According to Basudev Dhar, President of the Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council, this year saw a record 33,350 puja mandaps erected nationwide — a significant rise from previous years. Dhar praised the government’s cooperation in ensuring smooth celebrations and safeguarding the community’s religious freedom.

Unprecedented Security Measures

The Home Ministry has mobilized an extensive security network to prevent violence during the five-day festival. This includes:

🔸200,000 Para Police Ansars

🔸430 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)

🔸Over 70,000 police personnel

Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury urged citizens to remain vigilant against rumors and misinformation allegedly spread by allies of the ousted Sheikh Hasina regime. He called upon the media to play a responsible role in maintaining communal harmony.

Minority Concerns Remain

Despite official assurances, minority groups continue to express concerns about their safety. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC) reported over 2,400 incidents of communal violence since August 2024, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted.

The attacks, including vandalism of temples and assaults on Hindu families, have raised alarm in India. New Delhi has officially voiced concern over the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh, urging Dhaka to ensure full protection of religious minorities.

While Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has called for national unity and religious harmony, activists argue that minorities remain vulnerable and often face systemic exclusion in public and political life.

India Watching Closely

Given the cultural and historical ties between India and Bangladesh, New Delhi is keeping a close eye on developments. Sources indicate that Indian officials are in touch with Dhaka regarding the safety of Hindus during the Durga Puja festivities.

For millions of Bangladeshi Hindus, Durga Puja remains both a spiritual celebration and a test of communal harmony in the face of growing political uncertainty.
