The visit aims to strengthen the growing strategic partnership between India and Cyprus, building on the momentum generated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Nicosia in June 2025—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades.

Talks with Jaishankar, Lecture Scheduled

During his stay, FM Constantinos Kombos is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar and deliver a public lecture on Thursday.

The two leaders last met in New York during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in September, where they discussed the progress made since PM Modi’s visit.

Following that meeting, EAM Jaishankar posted on X (formerly Twitter):

> “Always great meeting FM Constantinos Kombos of Cyprus. Reviewed the progress in bilateral ties since the successful visit of PM Narendra Modi. Appreciate his insights on developments in Europe. Reaffirmed support for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Cyprus Question in accordance with the agreed UN framework and the relevant UNSC resolutions.”

PM Modi’s Landmark Visit to Cyprus

Prime Minister Modi’s June 2025 visit to Cyprus marked a major diplomatic milestone, during which several bilateral agreements were signed to boost cooperation in trade, maritime affairs, renewable energy, and technology.

During the visit, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides conferred upon PM Modi the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III—the island nation’s highest civilian honour—at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

President Christodoulides also accompanied PM Modi on a symbolic tour of the ceasefire line in old Nicosia, where remnants of the 1974 Turkish invasion still remain visible.

Geopolitical Context

The strengthening of India-Cyprus relations comes amid ongoing tensions between Cyprus and Turkey, especially over Ankara’s recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and disputes related to gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Analysts see this visit as an opportunity for both sides to enhance political coordination, economic collaboration, and people-to-people exchanges while reaffirming shared democratic and multilateral values.

A Continued Partnership

The visit by FM Constantinos Kombos reflects both nations’ commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic engagement, following a year of heightened activity between New Delhi and Nicosia.

The outcomes of this visit are expected to further consolidate India’s outreach to the Mediterranean region, particularly in energy cooperation, maritime security, and digital innovation.
