The news was confirmed by Asrani’s manager and later shared through the actor’s official Instagram account, where a heartfelt post described him as “the king of comedy who ruled over millions of hearts.”

A Career That Defined Laughter

With a film career spanning over five decades and more than 350 movies, Asrani was one of Indian cinema’s most enduring comic figures. A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he began his journey in the mid-1960s, taking on serious roles before finding his true calling in comedy.

His performances in timeless classics like “Sholay,” “Chupke Chupke,” “Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar,” and “Chala Murari Hero Banne” made him a household name. His portrayal of the bumbling jailor in Sholay—a parody of Hitler—remains etched in the memory of generations of moviegoers.

Tributes Pour In from the Film Industry

Soon after the news broke, tributes flooded social media from across the entertainment industry.

Actor Anupam Kher posted an emotional message on Instagram:

> “Dearest Asrani ji, thank you for making the world a better place with your persona — on and off screen. We will miss you, but your laughter will live forever. Om Shanti.”

Akshay Kumar, who shared screen space with Asrani in cult hits like Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, and De Dana Dan, expressed shock at the sudden demise.

> “Speechless with grief… We had just met last week on the sets of Haiwaan. His comic timing was unmatched. A huge loss to Indian cinema,” Akshay wrote.

Asrani had recently completed filming for two upcoming projects — Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan, both directed by Priyadarshan.

Legacy That Will Live on

Beyond his comic roles, Asrani directed several Hindi and Gujarati films, showcasing his versatility as a performer and filmmaker. His collaborations with Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and Govinda bridged generations of comedy in Bollywood.

From the 1970s through the 2000s, Asrani’s expressive humor, relatable characters, and perfect timing brought joy to millions — marking him as one of India’s greatest entertainers.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his laughter will echo in Indian cinema forever.
Om Shanti.
