Assam Earthquake: Minor Damages and Injuries Reported
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in its preliminary report stated that several districts experienced minor damages. Cracks were observed in walls and non-structural parts of buildings in Biswanath, Darrang, Hojai, Nalbari, and Sonitpur districts.
In Udalguri, two schoolgirls sustained injuries when the ceiling of Danda Saharia Girls’ Hostel collapsed during the tremors. They were rushed to a nearby hospital and are reported to be out of danger.
Tremors Felt Beyond Assam
Residents across the northeast—including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur—reported feeling the quake. Parts of North Bengal, particularly Siliguri and Jalpaiguri, also experienced mild shaking. Neighboring countries Bangladesh and Bhutan recorded tremors as well, though no significant damage was reported.
Eyewitnesses described sudden jolts lasting several seconds, forcing many people to rush outdoors. In Guwahati, panic spread briefly as residents left their homes and offices until the shaking subsided.

Expert Warnings and Safety Measures
Seismologists note that the northeast falls under Seismic Zone V, the most vulnerable category in India, making earthquakes a recurrent risk in the region. Experts have stressed the importance of earthquake-resistant construction and regular safety drills in schools, offices, and residential complexes.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, follow safety protocols, and report any structural damages to local disaster management offices.
Looking Ahead: Need for Preparedness
Although the latest Assam Earthquake did not cause widespread devastation, officials warned that even moderate earthquakes could trigger landslides, building collapses, and infrastructure damages in the fragile northeastern terrain.
With three aftershocks already recorded, residents have been advised to stay alert. Disaster management teams remain on standby for rapid response.
