Agartala, September 14: Tripura has taken another step towards strengthening its organic agriculture sector, with around 5,000 organically grown aromatic lemons being dispatched to Kolkata on Monday, opening up a larger market for farmers of the state.
The consignment, produced by the “Jalja Farmer Producer Company (FPC)” under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), was flagged off from the MOVCDNER office premises at AD Nagar in Agartala.
The consignment was flagged off by Sri Apurba Roy, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Tripura. The programme was attended by Sri Rajib Debbarma, Mission Director, Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA), Sri Sanjib Debbarma, Deputy Director (West District), Assistant Directors Smt Rakhi Debbarma and Smt Maitri Guha, along with representatives of various Farmer Producer Companies and officials of service provider agencies.
The lemons were cultivated following organic farming practices and are being sent to the Kolkata market as part of efforts to connect Tripura’s organic farmers with consumers and buyers outside the state.
For farmers, such initiatives are more than just a market linkage. Access to larger markets can create better opportunities for selling their produce and improving their income. At the same time, the movement of Tripura’s organic products to major markets outside the Northeast is helping build recognition for the state’s growing organic agriculture sector.

The programme also included a review meeting with representatives of different FPCs, where discussions were held on future crop planning, selection of suitable crops and the area of land to be brought under cultivation by each FPC. The discussions focused on strengthening production and ensuring that future agricultural activities are better aligned with market demand.
The initiative was jointly organised by the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) and the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA).
The dispatch of the aromatic lemons marks another effort to take Tripura’s farm produce beyond the state’s borders and establish stronger market linkages for its organic farmers.
