Piyush Goyal to Visit Japan August 24-27:
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit Japan from August 24 to 27 to strengthen economic and strategic ties between the two countries, as bilateral trade has reached around $27.5 billion in FY 2025-26.

The upcoming visit is expected to provide an opportunity for India and Japan to deepen business partnerships, encourage investments and strengthen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership across multiple sectors.

Goyal Invites Japanese Businesses to Invest in India
Goyal extended an invitation to Japanese businesses to expand their investments and partnerships in India while addressing an event organised by the Uttar Pradesh government for a Japanese delegation.
The event was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and a delegation from Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture.
Goyal said his upcoming visit would help take discussions forward at the highest levels of government and industry while exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
He highlighted the growing economic relationship between India and Japan, describing the partnership as one rooted in shared aspirations for peace, progress and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
Bilateral Trade Reaches $27.5 Billion
India-Japan bilateral trade stood at approximately $27.5 billion during FY 2025-26, reflecting the expanding economic relationship between the two Asian economies.
Japan has also emerged as India’s fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI), providing a strong foundation for further expansion of commercial ties.
Goyal said the growing presence of Japanese businesses across Indian states demonstrates that the partnership is no longer limited to cooperation between the two central governments.
Over 1,400 Japanese Companies Operating in India
The minister highlighted the significant footprint of Japanese companies in India, with more than 1,400 Japanese firms currently operating across the country.
Major Japanese companies such as Suzuki, Toyota and Honda have established a strong presence in India’s mobility sector, while Sony operates in electronics and Hitachi and Mitsubishi have expanded their engineering-related activities.
India-Japan cooperation is also visible through major infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project and Japanese-assisted metro systems in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.
Goyal also pointed to 11 Japanese industrial townships across eight Indian states as examples of the deepening business partnership.

Uttar Pradesh Emerging as Investment Destination
Goyal highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s growing economic potential and its ambition to become a $1 trillion economy under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
He said the state’s large population, improving connectivity, expanding industrial base and skilled workforce could provide Japanese companies with opportunities to combine their technology and expertise with India’s young workforce and growing consumer market.
The presence of the Yamanashi delegation was described as another indication of the expanding partnership between Japan and India’s states and regions.
Japan Plans Major Investment in India
Goyal also referred to the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, held in New Delhi in July 2026, which reinforced the strategic and economic ambitions of the relationship.
Japan has set a target of investing 10 trillion yen in India over the next decade, underlining its long-term interest in India’s economic growth and expanding market.
Against this backdrop, Goyal’s August 24-27 Japan visit is expected to focus on translating the growing strategic relationship into deeper trade, investment and industry-level partnerships.
