India Launches 1st World Yogasana Championship:
In a major milestone for Indian sports and global wellness, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday officially unveiled the first-ever World Yogasana Championship (WYC) 2026 in New Delhi.

The championship, dedicated entirely to Yogasana as a competitive sport, is scheduled to take place from June 4 to June 8, 2026, at Eka Arena in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Over 60 Countries to Participate
According to organisers, the World Yogasana Championship 2026 will witness participation from athletes and delegations representing more than 60 countries, including Uganda, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, Japan, Oman, Mauritius, and the Netherlands.
The event is being seen as India’s ambitious effort to establish Yogasana as a globally recognised competitive sport and eventually secure its inclusion in the Olympic Games.
Championship Branding Unveiled
During the launch event, officials unveiled the championship logo, official trophy, team jersey and mascot named “Veer the Lion”.
Organisers said the branding reflects Yogasana’s transformation into a modern global sport rooted in India’s ancient cultural heritage. The theme combines athletic excellence, international unity, youth aspirations and India’s vision of becoming a developed nation under the “Viksit Bharat” initiative.
Government and Sports Bodies Extend Support
The World Yogasana Championship 2026 is backed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Ayush, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sports Authority of Gujarat, Gujarat Tourism, and Gujarat Yogasana Sports Association.
Officials stated that the collaborative effort aims to promote Yogasana globally and strengthen its position on the international sporting stage.
Mandaviya Highlights India’s Leadership in Yoga
Speaking at the launch, Mansukh Mandaviya said India is leading the global movement to transform Yogasana into a recognised international sport.
“India gifted yoga to the world under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the nation is now leading the movement to establish Yogasana as a globally recognised competitive sport,” Mandaviya said.
“The World Yogasana Championship reflects the strength of our youth, our culture, and our vision of positioning India at the forefront of emerging global sports,” he added.

Organisers Aim for Olympic Recognition
Jaideep Arya, Secretary General of World Yogasana and Yogasana Bharat, said the championship has already generated strong enthusiasm across continents.
“There are more than 60 countries joining this movement and the enthusiasm is growing rapidly. Our vision is not only to organise championships, but also to establish Yogasana as a sporting discipline rooted in India’s ancient wisdom while aligning with modern sports governance and international standards,” Arya said.
Udit Sheth, President of Yogasana Bharat, described Yogasana as potentially “India’s greatest sporting contribution to the world.”
Multiple Competitive Categories Planned
The championship will feature various categories including Traditional Yogasana, Artistic Yogasana, Rhythmic Pairs, and Team Events.
Participants will compete across junior, youth and elite divisions under internationally recognised judging and scoring systems.
Officials believe the championship could become a major step towards Yogasana’s inclusion in international multi-sport competitions and eventual Olympic recognition.
As preparations begin for June 2026, Ahmedabad and Gujarat are positioning themselves as global hubs for sports, wellness tourism and cultural exchange through this landmark event.
