Record Growth in Defence Exports

The surge highlights India’s rapid transformation into a key global player in the defence manufacturing sector. According to the Ministry of Defence, the achievement aligns with the government’s vision of positioning India among the world’s leading defence exporters.

The country now exports defence equipment and systems to more than 80 countries, reflecting growing international confidence in Indian-made products.

DPSUs Lead, Private Sector Gains Ground

Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) played a significant role in driving this growth, contributing ₹21,071 crore—accounting for 54.84 per cent of total exports. Notably, DPSU exports surged by an impressive 151 per cent compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the private sector contributed ₹17,353 crore, making up 45.16 per cent of exports. Although the growth rate for private firms stood at 14 per cent, their steady expansion underscores increasing participation in the defence ecosystem.

Rising Global Demand for Indian Defence Products

The number of defence exporters in India has also increased significantly, rising from 128 to 145—a growth of over 13 per cent. This indicates broader industry participation and improved ease of doing business in the sector.

India’s defence exports include a wide range of products, from advanced systems and sub-systems to components and engineering solutions, which are increasingly being integrated into global supply chains.

Government Push and Strategic Vision

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the milestone, calling it a testament to India’s growing capabilities in defence manufacturing. He highlighted that sustained policy reforms, ease of doing business initiatives, and government support have enabled the sector to become more competitive globally.

The growth is also seen as a result of the government’s focus on “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) and boosting domestic production capacities.

Towards a Global Defence Hub

Experts believe that India’s consistent rise in defence exports is a strong indicator of its ambition to emerge as a global manufacturing hub. With continued investments in technology, innovation, and infrastructure, the country is expected to further expand its footprint in international defence markets.

Conclusion

The record-breaking performance in FY26 marks a significant milestone for India’s defence industry. As exports continue to rise and global demand strengthens, India appears well on track to establish itself as a major force in the global defence sector.
