Political tensions have escalated sharply in recent days, with an increase in political rallies, counter-rallies, violent clashes, arson attacks and killings, creating an increasingly volatile election atmosphere. The Dhaka Tribune reported that the frequency and intensity of such incidents have raised alarm among citizens and observers alike.

Observers noted that political unrest following election schedule announcements is not new in Bangladesh. However, they warned that the current situation appears more alarming than during previous election cycles, both in scale and severity. The deteriorating security environment has been compounded by a rise in brutal crimes alongside politically motivated violence, further deepening public anxiety across the country.

Killing of Political Leader Sparks Unrest

The situation worsened further after Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the radical organisation Inqilab Mancha and a potential candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the capital. Hadi was initially treated in Bangladesh before being shifted to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Following his death, protests and violent incidents erupted across Bangladesh. Reports indicate that houses belonging to several Awami League leaders and activists were targeted. Additionally, media offices and cultural institutions came under attack, intensifying fears of widespread instability.

Experts Express Deep Concern

Reacting to the developments, Md Touhidul Haque, Associate Professor and criminologist at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research, Dhaka University, described the situation as deeply worrying.
“Political differences and ideological conflicts are normal. But when these are exploited to justify violence, arson and killings, election-time stability is seriously threatened,” Haque said.

Ultimatum Issued to Interim Government

Meanwhile, the Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration has come under pressure after Inqilab Mancha issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for Hadi’s killing.
The ultimatum followed Hadi’s funeral, after which thousands of his supporters gathered at Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka on Saturday, turning the area into a major flashpoint, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
Issuing a warning to the interim government, a leader of the group said that if no action was taken by 5:15 pm on Sunday, another sit-in protest would be organised at Shahbagh.
The group also demanded that the iconic Shahbagh intersection be renamed ‘Hadi Chottor’, further signalling the intensifying political mobilisation.

Concerns Ahead of National Elections

With elections approaching, the escalating violence has raised serious questions about public safety, political stability and the conduct of free and fair polls in Bangladesh. Observers warn that unless swift measures are taken to restore law and order, the election environment may deteriorate further in the coming weeks.
