Powerful 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan:
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck off the eastern coast of Aomori, Japan, late Monday night, leaving at least 30 injured and prompting tsunami alerts along the Pacific coast. Authorities have warned citizens to remain alert, with the possibility of an even stronger quake in the coming days.

Tremor Strikes at Night, Triggers Tsunami Alerts
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake occurred at 11:15 p.m. on Monday at a depth of 54 kilometers. The agency initially reported the magnitude as 7.6 but later revised it to 7.5 after further analysis.
The quake triggered tsunami warnings, predicting waves up to 3 meters, and generated actual waves reaching 70 centimeters in Iwate Prefecture, as reported by Kyodo News. Roughly three and a half hours later, the warning was downgraded to an advisory and officially lifted at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Government Calls for Preparedness
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents in impacted regions to stay alert and monitor official warnings over the next week.
> “We ask everyone to remain vigilant, secure furniture and household items, and prepare for potential aftershocks,” she said.
Officials emphasized that the shaking intensity reached upper 6 on Japan’s seismic scale of 7, a level where standing becomes nearly impossible.

Risk of Stronger Quake Not Ruled Out
Following the tremor, the JMA issued a rare “Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory”, which is activated only when an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 or higher is recorded.
The agency has assessed a 1-in-100 chance of a magnitude 8.0 or stronger earthquake occurring within the next seven days. However, authorities clarified that no pre-evacuation orders are currently in place, as predictions remain probabilistic.
The quake occurred along a deep ocean trench where major seismic activity is common due to the Pacific Plate subducting beneath Honshu, the northern region of Japan.
Infrastructure Status & Emergency Response
Emergency teams continue assessing damage, though no major structural collapses or large-scale disruptions have been reported so far. Transportation services temporarily halted but are expected to resume after safety inspections.
Japan remains one of the world’s most earthquake-prepared nations, yet the advisory has increased public concern due to memories of past high-fatality quakes.
