A severe and prolonged drinking Water Crisis triggered a road blockade on Sunday near Lower Gate on the Kadamtala–Dharmanagar main road in North Tripura’s Kadamtala Block. The protest, which began around 10:30 AM, was led primarily by women from the Pramila Bahini group, representing residents of Ward No. 4 in the Bishnupur tea garden area, where clean water has reportedly been unavailable for over two months.

Residents Demand Urgent Action

Locals say they have submitted multiple complaints to the Kadamtala Panchayat and the district administration, but no concrete solution was provided.

“Despite numerous complaints, no effective action was taken,” a resident said during the protest.

The blockade was intended to demand immediate restoration of regular drinking water supply to the affected villages, which depend heavily on government pipelines and tanker services.

Traffic Disrupted for Hours

The protest caused major traffic congestion, leaving long lines of vehicles stranded on both sides of the vital route connecting Kadamtala to Dharmanagar. Daily commuters, local transport operators and emergency movement were significantly affected as negotiations continued.

Police from Kadamtala reached the protest site shortly after it began but were unable to disperse the demonstrators.

Authorities Intervene to Restore Calm

Tensions eased only after Kadamtala Panchayat Samiti Chairman Mihir Ranjan Nath arrived and assured the protesters that immediate measures would be taken to supply drinking water.

Following his assurance, the women lifted the blockade peacefully, and normal traffic movement resumed.

Residents, however, expressed cautious optimism, stating they expect visible action soon and will organize further protests if the promise remains unfulfilled.

Growing Water Crisis in Rural Tripura

Local villagers emphasized that the incident reflects a broader challenge in rural North Tripura.

The shortage has heightened concerns over public health and basic rights, prompting a rise in grassroots activism and women-led community mobilization.

Many villagers stressed the urgent need for sustainable water infrastructure, regular maintenance of pipelines and better communication from local authorities.
