Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, one of India’s most beloved and enduring screen icons, passed away on Monday at the age of 89. The legendary actor, who had recently been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital due to breathing complications, was discharged after recovery but his health deteriorated again.
As news of his demise spread, the Bollywood fraternity gathered in Mumbai to pay their final respects. Actors Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, and filmmaker Karan Johar were among the first to reach the crematorium in Vile Parle.

Hospitalisation and Final Moments
Dharmendra was reportedly put on a ventilator as his condition worsened. His family, including wife and fellow actor Hema Malini, was present. She had previously assured the media during an earlier hospital visit that the actor was stable.
In recent years, Dharmendra had been living at his Khandala farmhouse, away from Mumbai’s rising pollution. He stayed there with his first wife Prakash Kaur.
A Journey that Began with a Filmfare Talent Hunt
Born in 1935 in Punjab, Dharmendra’s entry into films is a story of talent meeting destiny. In 1958, he won a prestigious Filmfare–Bimal Roy talent hunt, selected for his good looks, screen presence, and natural charm.
This contest would later also discover superstar Rajesh Khanna.
He made his debut in the early 1960s and quickly became a favourite of audiences and filmmakers alike.
