Nowgam Police Station Blast:

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Saturday expressed deep regret over the massive explosion that struck the Nowgam Police Station Blast late Friday night, killing nine individuals and injuring several others. Addressing the media at the Police Control Room (PCR) in Srinagar, the DGP categorically dismissed any terror-related angle, calling the incident an “accidental blast” and urging the public to avoid “unnecessary speculation.”

Large Seizure of Explosive Material Under Examination

According to DGP Prabhat, the Nowgam Police Station Blast occurred as police were conducting sampling of a large cache of seized explosive material, recovered earlier from Faridabad during a major crackdown on a white-collar terror network.

“A huge quantity of explosive material from Faridabad was brought to Nowgam Police Station and kept securely in open space,” the DGP said.

“Due to its unstable nature, handling required extreme caution. Unfortunately, around 11:20 pm on Friday, an accidental explosion occurred.”

The seized material, including ammonium nitrate, had been under forensic sampling for two days prior to the incident.

Nine Lives Lost, Several Injured

The DGP confirmed that nine individuals, including police and forensic personnel, tragically lost their lives. The victims include:

1 Special Investigation Agency (SIA) personnel

2 revenue officers

3 Forensic Lab Services (FLS) personnel

2 crime branch photographers

1 tailor

After the Nowgam police station blast the buildings suffered extensive damage, and nearby structures also felt the impact. The blast was so powerful that the sound was heard 5–10 km away, and several vehicles inside the compound caught fire.

Injured personnel have been admitted to the Army’s Base Hospital in Badami Bagh and the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura.

DGP Rejects Terror Claim, Stresses Avoiding Rumours

While an outfit associated with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and calling itself the People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF) claimed responsibility for the blast, the DGP firmly rejected the assertion.

> “Any further speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary,” he said, emphasizing that no evidence points to a terror attack.

He also stressed that the cause remains under examination and assured that the police stand firmly with the families of the deceased.

Background: Major Terror Module Busted Recently

The explosive materials involved were linked to a major JeM-backed terror module busted earlier this month. The J&K Police, in coordination with Haryana Police, had recovered:

2,900 kg ammonium nitrate in Faridabad

360 kg additional explosives from the residence of Dr. Muzammil Ganaie

Multiple individuals, including Dr. Adil Rather, Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, and Shaheen Shahid of Lucknow, were arrested in connection with the module. A key accused, Dr. Umar Nabi, had recently died in a car blast near Red Fort, which killed several civilians.

On-Ground Assessment Underway

Earlier on Saturday morning, DGP Prabhat, along with senior officers, inspected the Nowgam Police Station site. Fire tenders and ambulances worked through the night to control the blaze and evacuate the injured.

As investigations continue, authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and rely on official updates rather than circulating unverified information.
