Value-Driven Exports:

India’s export strategy must evolve beyond expanding volumes to focus on high-quality job creation, sustainability and inclusivity, according to experts speaking at an industry event in the capital on Friday. The remarks come as India celebrates a record $824.9 billion in total exports in FY 2024–25, including $387.5 billion in services, signaling its rising global trade influence.

A New Paradigm: Growth With Purpose

Shishir Priyadarshi, President of the Chintan Research Foundation (CRF), said India’s progress must be judged not just by the speed of export growth but by the sustainability and distribution of its benefits.

> “The test of India’s strategy will not be how fast we grow, but how sustainably we grow, and who benefits from that growth,” Priyadarshi said.

CRF’s statement highlighted the need for product diversification, value addition, and improved ease of doing business to maintain export momentum.

Labour-Intensive Sectors Need Priority

Industry leaders emphasised that India must strengthen labour-intensive export sectors—such as gems and jewellery, textiles, and apparel—to support inclusive economic growth.

Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), said technological innovation must be paired with workforce skills to position India as a global manufacturing leader.

> “Technology, harnessed with skills, can produce modern-age jewellery and make India a global leader,” Ray noted.

FTAs Need Better Execution to Deliver Results

India has signed multiple Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with partners including the UAE, Australia and the EU. However, experts warned that the benefits of these agreements will remain limited without strong trade facilitation and logistics reforms.

Faster policy execution, streamlined customs processes and reduced transaction costs were identified as crucial steps toward improving export competitiveness.

Logistics Efficiency Is Key to Global Competitiveness

India’s logistics costs remain higher than those of competing economies. Experts argued that effective implementation of the PM Gati Shakti programme and the National Logistics Policy (NLP) is essential to reduce costs and improve trade resilience.

Even a 1% reduction in logistics costs can add billions to India’s export competitiveness, speakers said. They added that export growth requires coordinated reforms across finance, education, infrastructure and sustainability standards.

Innovation Will Drive the Next Export Wave

Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of the Atal Innovation Mission (NITI Aayog), highlighted the increasing overlap between innovation and global trade.

> “Export-led growth today is about exporting intelligence, not just goods,” Bagla said. “From services to semiconductors, India’s future lies in combining innovation with execution efficiency.”

Conclusion: Converting Domestic Strength Into Global Advantage

Experts concluded that India’s economic trajectory will depend on transforming its domestic capabilities into a powerful global advantage—anchored in sustainability, innovation and inclusive job creation.
