India-Botswana Ties:
Botswana President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko hailed India as the “mother of democracy” and a “steadfast source of inspiration,” as he warmly welcomed President Droupadi Murmu to Gaborone on Wednesday.

This marks the first-ever Presidential visit from India to Botswana, and notably, the first State Visit hosted by President Boko since assuming office last year—underscoring the growing significance of bilateral ties between the two nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
During their talks, both leaders held one-to-one meetings and delegation-level discussions, agreeing to deepen cooperation in multiple key sectors including trade and investment, agriculture, renewable energy, education, health, defence, and digital technology.
President Murmu emphasized that this visit represents an important milestone ahead of the 60th anniversary of India-Botswana diplomatic relations in 2026, reaffirming India’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with Africa through platforms such as the India-Africa Forum Summit.
Project Cheetah and Wildlife Conservation
One of the highlights of the visit was Botswana’s agreement to assist India in the next phase of ‘Project Cheetah’, an ambitious wildlife conservation initiative aimed at reintroducing the cheetah to Indian ecosystems.
“The President thanked Botswana and its people for agreeing to send their cheetahs to India,” the President’s Secretariat said in a statement. The collaboration marks another symbol of the countries’ growing environmental partnership.
Healthcare and Education Partnerships
An important agreement on pharmacopoeia was signed to provide Botswana with affordable, high-quality Indian medicines. India also announced the supply of essential antiretroviral (ARV) medicines, as requested by Botswana’s government.
President Boko lauded President Murmu’s advocacy for education, gender equality, and social upliftment, describing her visit as an “inspiration for the African continent.”

Cultural Ties and Economic Vision 2036
President Murmu’s itinerary includes an address to the National Assembly of Botswana, interactions with the Indian community, and visits to historical and cultural landmarks.
Botswana’s Vision 2036 aims to transform the nation into a high-income economy through diversification. The Indian business community is expected to play a significant role in this process, with increased collaboration in sectors like renewable energy, agriculture, and skill development.
Ahead of the visit, MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela highlighted India’s engagement with Botswana on economic and environmental fronts, expressing optimism about the progress of joint initiatives.
A Landmark in India-Africa Relations
President Murmu’s visit to Botswana follows her successful State Visit to Angola, where she participated in the country’s 50th Independence Day celebrations. Together, these visits mark a new chapter in India’s outreach to Africa, reinforcing its role as a trusted development partner across the continent.
