West District Traffic Police Superintendent Kanta Jahangir personally supervised the destruction process. Speaking to the media, Jahangir said that such high-decibel silencers not only violate traffic laws but also cause serious inconvenience to the public — especially senior citizens, children, and patients.

“These loud silencers are a major source of noise pollution. Most of them are installed by young riders for thrill, but they create public nuisance,” Jahangir stated. She urged the youth to act responsibly and avoid using illegal vehicle modifications.

According to the officer, action against offenders will continue in the coming days. “Under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, vehicles fitted with such modified silencers can be seized, the owners fined ₹10,000, and the driving licence suspended for up to three months,” she warned.

The police had conducted a series of raids in various parts of Agartala over the past few weeks, resulting in the seizure of 410 loud silencers from two-wheelers. The crushing of the seized silencers was carried out in compliance with the court’s directive.

Side Effects of Using Loud Bike Silencers

Experts warn that the use of modified or loud silencers has several harmful effects — both physiological and environmental:

  • Hearing damage: Prolonged exposure to sound levels above 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
  • Mental stress: Continuous loud noise increases stress, anxiety, and irritation, particularly among the elderly and children.
  • Sleep disturbance: Nighttime noise can lead to insomnia and fatigue, reducing overall productivity.
  • Heart and blood pressure problems: Studies show that long-term exposure to high noise levels can elevate blood pressure and cause cardiovascular strain.
  • Environmental impact: Loud exhausts contribute to noise pollution, disturbing wildlife and community peace.
  • Mechanical damage: Modifying silencers can also harm the engine’s performance, leading to poor mileage and faster wear of exhaust systems.

While confirming the destruction, the police did not disclose whether any further legal proceedings or fines were imposed on the motorcycle owners involved.
