In a meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday, Saha discussed several key proposals aimed at boosting Tripura’s healthcare capabilities, officials from the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed.

Dr. Manik Saha’s Proposal for New Medical College at Kulai

The Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need for a medical college at Kulai in Dhalai district under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. According to officials, this project would significantly improve access to quality healthcare and medical education in the tribal-dominated areas of Tripura.

Currently, Tripura has three medical colleges — Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Tripura Medical College (run by a society formed by the state government), and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College, a private institution.

The proposed institution at Kulai would become the fourth medical college in the state, marking a major step toward addressing the growing demand for doctors and healthcare professionals in Tripura.

Healthcare Infrastructure & Equipment Upgrades

Besides the new college proposal, CM Dr. Manik Saha also urged the Union Minister to allocate funds for advanced medical equipment at the super-speciality block of AGMC. He further requested additional funding for the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) to help settle pending claims and ensure smoother delivery of benefits to the public.

The Chief Minister also discussed plans for establishing a tertiary ophthalmology hospital and an immunology laboratory for organ transplant services at the Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, which would boost the state’s capacity to handle specialized medical treatments.

Increasing MBBS Seats in Tripura

Earlier, Dr. Saha had announced that efforts are underway to increase the MBBS seat capacity at AGMC. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has already granted permission for 150 MBBS seats for the 2025–26 academic session.

Out of these, 118 seats are reserved for Tripura students, 22 for Central Government nominees, and 10 for candidates from the Northeast region. Currently, 525 students are pursuing their MBBS degrees at AGMC.

Tripura’s Vision for Better Healthcare

Tripura’s government has been focusing on strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery, especially in rural and underserved regions. The proposed Kulai Medical College, if approved, is expected to create more local opportunities for aspiring doctors, improve patient care, and reduce referral pressure on existing institutions.

Officials expressed optimism that with the Union Health Ministry’s support, Tripura’s healthcare infrastructure will reach new heights in the coming years.
