Repositioning Indian Textiles for the Modern Generation
According to the Ministry’s statement, India’s textiles and clothing market currently stands at $179 billion (2024), growing at an annual rate of over 7%. With the Swadeshi Campaign, the domestic demand is projected to rise at a CAGR of 9–10%, setting India firmly on track to achieve the $250 billion target within five years.
The initiative seeks to blend tradition with modern trends, positioning Indian textiles as a symbol of pride, sustainability, and style for younger generations. The government plans to use social media outreach, influencer collaborations, and local events to spread the campaign’s message across India.
Empowering Artisans, Weavers, and MSMEs
A key focus of the campaign is to boost income and market access for India’s millions of artisans, weavers, and MSME units.
Currently, the household (HH) sector accounts for 58% of domestic textile demand, growing at a CAGR of 8.19%, while non-household consumption contributes 21%, growing at 6.79% annually.
To support local production and increase adoption, ministries, PSUs, and educational institutions will be encouraged to use Indian-made fabrics for uniforms, furnishings, and decor, reinforcing the “Vocal for Local” spirit in institutional spaces.
Swadeshi Campaign Aligned with National Textile Missions
The Swadeshi initiative complements flagship government programs such as:
1.Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Textiles
2.PM MITRA Parks for integrated textile value chains
3.One District One Product (ODOP) initiative promoting regional crafts
These programs collectively aim to modernize India’s textile ecosystem, enhance exports, and create employment opportunities across rural and urban regions.

GST Reforms and Policy Support to Spur Growth
Recent GST rate revisions on textiles and apparel are expected to boost affordability and demand in both household and institutional sectors. The Ministry anticipates this will further accelerate domestic consumption growth and benefit small textile producers nationwide.
Conclusion
As India looks to strengthen its self-reliance narrative, the Swadeshi campaign is not just an economic initiative but a cultural movement — celebrating local craftsmanship, empowering weavers, and redefining fashion through Indian identity.
