In a move to spread festive cheer, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday announced a 3% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for government employees and pensioners, effective October 1, 2025. The announcement comes just ahead of Durga Puja, providing much-needed financial relief to thousands of families across the state .

3% DA hike , A Festive Gift for Government Employees
Speaking at the concluding session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, CM Saha described the DA hike as a “special Durga Puja gift” for employees and retirees. The state government will allocate ₹125 crore to implement this decision, ensuring that both active and retired staff benefit from the festive season boost.
The Chief Minister said, “Despite financial constraints, we felt it necessary to provide this relief. Even a 1% increase costs around ₹100 crore, but this step will significantly support employees during the festive season.”
Building on Past Increases
Highlighting his government’s employee-friendly approach, Saha reminded the Assembly that a 29% DA hike was implemented soon after he assumed office. This fresh increase, though modest in comparison, reflects the state’s continued commitment to improving employee welfare despite budgetary challenges.
Contrast with West Bengal
Interestingly, the move has also drawn political comparisons with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has faced criticism over delays in announcing similar benefits for state employees. Many see Saha’s timely announcement as a strategic step that underscores the Tripura government’s responsiveness to worker needs.
Financial Impact and Public Response
Economists note that while the hike will cost the exchequer an additional ₹125 crore, the boost in disposable income will circulate back into the economy through increased spending during the festive season.
Public reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with employees’ unions and pensioners’ groups welcoming the relief as a much-needed gesture of goodwill. For many households, the DA hike will make a tangible difference in meeting rising costs during Puja festivities.
Looking Ahead
As Tripura gears up for its most celebrated festival, this DA and DR hike has strengthened the goodwill between the state government and its employees. With elections approaching in the next couple of years, political analysts also view this decision as a smart move to consolidate support among one of the largest voter groups—government workers and pensioners.
For now, the announcement has ensured that the spirit of Durga Puja will be brighter for thousands of families across Tripura.
