Agartala, Sep 17, 2025 – Agriculture and Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das today took part in the Annual Review Meet (2024–2025) of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig held at Pragya Bhavan, Agartala.
The review meet brought together scientists, policymakers, and experts to assess progress in piggery research and development, while also laying out strategies for the coming year.

Speaking at the session, Sudhangshu Das emphasized the importance of strengthening the piggery sector in Tripura. He noted that developing this sector would not only enhance nutritional security but also make the state more self-reliant in pig production, thereby supporting thousands of livestock farmers.
Boosting Farmers’ Income Through Piggery
Piggery plays a significant role in Tripura’s rural economy. With increasing demand for pork in both domestic and regional markets, improving breeding practices, disease control, and farmer training has become essential. The AICRP on Pig is working to introduce improved pig breeds, enhance productivity, and ensure better market linkages for pig farmers.
Das underlined that empowering pig farmers will lead to enhanced rural livelihoods and create sustainable income opportunities for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and small-scale farmers.
Research and Innovation in Pig Farming
The AICRP on Pig serves as a key national initiative to promote scientific piggery practices. In Tripura, it focuses on research in breeding, nutrition, and health management while also supporting farmers with training programs.
Experts at the meet highlighted innovative approaches for reducing production costs, developing feed resources, and ensuring disease-free pig populations to meet growing consumer demand.
Toward a Self-Reliant Tripura
Das reiterated the state government’s commitment to make Tripura a hub of livestock farming. By scaling up piggery, the government aims to achieve nutritional security, self-sufficiency, and enhanced farmer incomes.
He also appreciated the contributions of scientists and institutions working under AICRP on Pig and called for stronger collaboration between research centres, extension workers, and farmers.
The meet concluded with technical sessions and presentations on recent achievements, challenges, and the way forward for sustainable piggery development in the state.
