Onam, one of the most vibrant and cherished festivals of Kerala, will be celebrated with grandeur on September 5, 2025. Kerala’s backwaters come alive with the thrilling Vallamkali, or Snake Boat Race. Teams of rowers in long, beautifully decorated boats race against each other to the beats of traditional songs, attracting visitors from across India and abroad.
Pulikali: Dance of the Tigers
The streets witness the playful art of Pulikali, where men paint themselves as tigers and hunters, dancing to the beat of traditional drums. This folk art is a unique spectacle and takes center stage on the fourth day of Onam.

Onam Sadya: The Feast of Unity
Food is at the heart of Onam. Families gather for the grand Onam Sadya, a traditional feast served on banana leaves. It includes up to 13 dishes such as rice, vegetable curries, sambar, curd, and the much-loved Payasam, a sweet dish made from rice, coconut, milk, and sugar. The Sadya is both a celebration of abundance and a symbol of community bonding.
Cultural Showcases: Dance & Drama
Onam is also celebrated through art forms like Kathakali, a classical dance-drama narrating stories from Hindu epics. Other traditional dances such as Thiruvathira, Kummattikali, Thumbi Thullal, and Onam Kali are performed across temples and cultural venues, adding color and vibrancy to the festivities.
The tenth and most important day, Thiruvonam, marks the peak of Onam celebrations. Processions featuring decorated elephants, temple rituals, and cultural events are organized across Kerala. Devotees also immerse Onathappan clay idols in rivers or the sea, symbolizing King Mahabali’s farewell.
