Dr. Saha highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on sports development and said that Tripura is following the same path. Over the last six to seven years, the state has made significant progress in building sports infrastructure, enabling young athletes to achieve success at state, national, and international levels.
Agartala has come alive with the spirit of sports as the Yonex Sunrise North East Zone Inter State and Zonal Badminton Championship 2025 began at the NSRCC Indoor Hall on Thursday. The four-day event, hosted by the Tripura Badminton Association, will run till September 7, bringing together more than 200 players and officials from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who inaugurated the championship, described it as a vibrant celebration of talent, unity, and the spirit of the North East.
“The role of sports is important in increasing the freshness of both body and mind. Therefore, there is no way to neglect the need for sports in developing a healthy mentality,” the Chief Minister said.
Tripura’s Sports Infrastructure Boost
The Chief Minister shared details of recently completed and ongoing sports projects in the state:
8 synthetic turf football fields already built, with one more under construction.
1 synthetic hockey field and 1 swimming pool completed
2 synthetic athletic tracks developed at Panisagar and Badharghat.
3 synthetic turfs built under the Tribal Welfare Department and another in Dhalai district.

Dr. Saha also recalled major announcements made in the State Budget to further strengthen sports infrastructure. Plans include two multipurpose indoor sports halls at Kailashahar and Udaipur, new synthetic football turfs at Gandatuisa and Kakraban, and a 200-bed sports hostel at Dashrath Dev Sports Complex in Badharghat.
Additionally, 50 open gymnasiums will be set up across different locations. At Bholagiri in Agartala, a modern sports hub with a gallery, international-standard swimming pool, natural football field, and multipurpose sports hall is also on the cards.
Presence of Sporting Icons
The event was attended by several dignitaries including Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports P.K. Chakraborty, Director L. Darlong, Padma Shri awardee and Olympian gymnast Dipa Karmakar, and Tripura Badminton Association Working President Ratan Saha.
The championship not only provides a platform for budding shuttlers but also symbolizes the power of sports in strengthening regional unity and brotherhood.
With Agartala at the center of this grand sporting spectacle, the North East is once again showcasing its immense talent, passion, and dedication towards badminton and sports at large.
