Former US National Security Advisor (NSA) John Bolton has sharply criticized former US President Donald Trump, accusing him of damaging decades of diplomatic progress in US-India relations.

In a post on X, Bolton wrote that the White House under Trump “has set US-India relations back decades, pushing Modi closer to Russia and China. Beijing has cast itself as an alternative to the US and Donald Trump.”
Bolton argued that Trump’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on Indian goods disrupted bilateral trade and weakened trust between the two nations. He said the policy had “shredded decades of Western efforts to align India away from its Cold War ties with Moscow and to address the growing threat from Beijing.”
The comments come at a time when Washington and New Delhi are working to expand strategic cooperation, including defense partnerships, technology transfers, and supply-chain resilience initiatives.
Analysts note that India has historically maintained strategic autonomy by balancing its relations with the US, Russia, and China. However, Trump’s tariff policy is believed to have fueled economic and diplomatic friction, forcing New Delhi to look eastward for alternative partnerships.
While the Biden administration has sought to reset ties with New Delhi through initiatives like the Quad grouping and defense collaboration, Bolton’s remarks highlight concerns that the US may have lost ground to China and Russia in wooing India during Trump’s tenure.
