Khelo India ASMITA: Breaking Barriers for Women in Football

In a landmark initiative to strengthen women’s participation in sports, the Khelo India ASMITA Football League 2025-26 was inaugurated by Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, at the Godavari Engineering College Ground in Jalgaon.

The event, held under the guidance of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with support from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), All India Football Federation (AIFF), and Western India Football Association (WIFA), is designed to identify and nurture young female football talent, especially from tribal and minority communities.

Addressing the gathering, Raksha Khadse emphasized the transformative nature of the initiative, calling it a platform “where passion turns into performance.” She added, “This league isn’t just about sports; it’s about breaking barriers and bringing hidden champions into the spotlight. It embodies the government’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.”

The ASMITA League is a core component of the Khelo Bharat Niti, focusing on grassroots development and women’s empowerment through sports. Targeting girls aged 13 and under, it provides equal opportunities for first-time players and rising stars, challenging stereotypes and creating new role models in Indian sports.

The inauguration was attended by dignitaries including Ketakitai Patil and Farukh Shaikh, Secretary of the Jalgaon District Football Association, along with members of the college administration. The event showcased broad institutional support, reinforcing the government’s commitment to making India a global sporting powerhouse with women playing a central role.

With initiatives like Khelo India ASMITA, India is not only shaping future champions but also reshaping the narrative around women in sports—turning untapped talent into international potential.
