The streets of Agartala came alive with colour and calls for equality on Saturday as Swabhiman – Tripura LGBTQIA+ Collective organised the state’s third Pride rally, urging the government to take stronger steps to create awareness about transgender rights.
Swabhiman, the first registered queer society in Tripura, had earlier made history by hosting the state’s first Pride rally in September 2022. This year’s march began and ended at Umakanta Academy grounds, covering key city locations as hundreds of participants waved rainbow flags and held placards advocating inclusivity.
“Our message in this Pride is that we are equally a part of this society like everyone else,” said Sneha Gupta Roy, rally organiser and member of the Tripura Transgender Board. “We face the same problems as others. This year, we also highlighted broader social issues like environmental pollution and women’s education.”
Gupta Roy revealed that transgender protection cells were being set up in various districts, which she believes will make it easier for the LGBTQIA+ community to engage with the government on their concerns.
However, she also pointed out that societal attitudes remain a challenge. “Indian society is still backward in many ways. The government needs to actively spread awareness about transgender rights,” she said.
The rally saw participation from lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals along with allies, creating a vibrant and powerful display of solidarity in the heart of Tripura’s capital.
