New Delhi | July 25, 2025 – Kamal Haasan, acclaimed actor and founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), officially entered Parliament today as he took oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, choosing to do so in Tamil, his mother tongue. The gesture received enthusiastic table-thumping applause from fellow Members of Parliament.

Elected unopposed on June 12 with the backing of the DMK-led alliance, Kamal Haasan opted for a Rajya Sabha seat instead of contesting a Lok Sabha seat, reaffirming his commitment to national public service.
In his oath, Haasan said in Tamil, “I will register my name and perform my duties as an Indian,” emphasizing his dedication to the nation and his roots.
He was among four MPs sworn in from Tamil Nadu, including Rajathi, S.R. Sivalingam, and P. Wilson, all taking oath in Tamil as well. The selection reflects a strategic alliance between MNM and DMK ahead of the 2024 elections.
