In a defining moment for India’s sporting future, the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, setting the stage for a comprehensive transformation of India’s sports ecosystem.

The new policy replaces the 2001 version, and presents a visionary, action-driven framework aimed at making India a top sporting nation, with sights set on the 2036 Olympic Games and beyond.
🏆 What the NSP 2025 Aims to Achieve
NSP 2025 is built on five strategic pillars:
1️⃣ Excellence on the Global Stage
- Develop sports from grassroots to elite level
- Introduce talent identification and nurturing systems
- Build world-class infrastructure in rural and urban areas
- Integrate sports science, medicine, and technology
- Strengthen National Sports Federations (NSFs) and training programs
2️⃣ Sports for Economic Development
- Promote sports tourism
- Strengthen India’s sports manufacturing sector
- Support sports startups and entrepreneurship
- Encourage PPP and CSR investment models
3️⃣ Sports for Social Development
- Ensure inclusive participation across women, tribals, economically weaker sections, and differently-abled athletes
- Promote indigenous games
- Make sports a viable career path through education, volunteerism, and dual careers
- Involve the Indian diaspora in sports initiatives
4️⃣ Sports as a People’s Movement
- Launch mass participation drives
- Introduce fitness indices in schools, colleges, and workplaces
- Ensure universal access to sports facilities nationwide
5️⃣ Integration with NEP 2020
- Embed sports into the school curriculum
- Train PE teachers and educators
- Encourage sports education as an academic discipline
🛠️ Implementation Strategy
To ensure results, the policy includes:
- Robust governance and legal framework
- A National Monitoring Framework with KPIs and benchmarks
- Technology integration (AI, analytics) for performance and tracking
- A Model Policy guideline for States/UTs
- A whole-of-government approach, involving all ministries in promoting sports

Officials emphasized that NSP 2025 is not just a policy, but a national mission aimed at fostering a healthy, engaged, and empowered population, while making India a top global sporting nation.
“NSP 2025 reflects our resolve to turn sports into a movement and a medal-winning force, making India a proud sporting superpower,” said a senior Ministry official.
