Detailed Account of the Incident

According to SDPO Panisagar Rahul Balhera, “the accused, Jaynal Uddin (44), is a relative from the maternal side of the family. He frequently visited the victim’s home as both families lived in the same neighborhood.”
On Saturday evening, when the 14-month-old girl child refused to eat dinner, the suspect offered to take her for a short walk. Trusting him, the parents allowed it. Hours passed, and neither the man nor the child returned, prompting the family to alert the police.

Police teams launched a search operation through the night. After several hours, officers noticed something suspicious beneath the muddy surface of a paddy field nearby. When the soil was dug up, the child’s body was discovered, confirming the parents’ worst fears.

Swift Police Action and Arrest

Following the discovery, the accused fled from the scene. Police initiated a manhunt and tracked his mobile location to Nilambazar in Lower Assam. Acting swiftly, the Tripura Police arrested him with assistance from local authorities.
“The accused has been brought back to Panisagar and will be produced before the court on Monday,” SDPO Balhera told Tripura Times.

The police have registered a case under Section 302 (Murder)Section 376 (Rape), and relevant provisions of the POCSO Act.

Public Outrage and Official Response

The barbaric act has provoked outrage throughout Tripura. Locals and activists took to the streets, demanding the harshest punishment for the perpetrator. Women’s groups and human rights organizations condemned the crime, calling it one of the most inhumane acts in recent memory.

Chief Minister Manik Saha strongly condemned the incident, assuring that the case would be taken up in a fast-track court to ensure swift justice.

A Call for Vigilance and Justice

Experts emphasize that crimes against children continue largely due to societal silence, lack of vigilance, and delayed justice. This case underscores the urgent need for stronger community awareness, early reporting, and robust legal enforcement.
The incident serves as a grim reminder that every delay in justice and every act of silence emboldens predators. India’s laws must not just exist on paper—they must inspire real fear in those who harm the innocent.
