India-New Zealand Advance Free Trade Pact
India-New Zealand have successfully concluded the fourth round of negotiations on the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signaling steady progress toward a modern and comprehensive trade partnership. The talks, held over five days in Auckland and Rotorua, were described as “constructive and forward-looking” by India’s Commerce Ministry.

Constructive Talks Aim for Early Convergence
According to the official statement, both sides agreed to maintain momentum through inter-sessional work and continue detailed discussions across all chapters of the proposed FTA.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade Todd McClay commended the progress made and reaffirmed their shared commitment to achieving an “early and balanced conclusion” of the trade pact.
“The two sides are determined to move towards early convergence on the India-New Zealand FTA,” the ministry said, emphasizing the shared vision for resilient, inclusive, and sustainable growth.
Key Focus Areas: Goods, Services, and Cooperation
The delegations held detailed engagements across crucial tracks — including trade in goods, trade in services, economic and trade cooperation, and rules of origin.
The discussions reflected the shared ambition to strengthen economic ties and foster a mutually beneficial partnership, building a framework that enhances market access, supports innovation, and promotes sustainable growth.
Strengthening Economic Partnership
Guided by the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains focused on deepening global trade ties that contribute to supply-chain resilience and economic prosperity.
“The proposed FTA is expected to enhance trade flows, deepen investment linkages, and provide greater predictability for businesses in both countries,” the Commerce Ministry stated.
In FY 2024–25, India’s bilateral merchandise trade with New Zealand reached $1.3 billion, representing a 49% year-on-year growth, underscoring the growing commercial potential between the two nations.
