The Significance of Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, is celebrated predominantly in North India — especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. The festival coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, a day dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

Women begin their day before sunrise with “Sargi”, a special meal prepared by mothers-in-law. The fast continues without food or water throughout the day and concludes only after sighting the moon.

Once the moon is visible, women perform a ritual — viewing it through a sieve, offering water (Arghya), and then breaking their fast after their husbands feed them the first bite.

Celebration Across India

Across India, markets are filled with festive energy — women dressed in bright sarees and adorned with mehndi gather for the evening puja, listening to stories of Veeravati, Karwa, and Savitri, symbols of marital devotion and strength.

As the moon graces the night sky, it marks the moment of love, faith, and togetherness that defines Karwa Chauth.
