India’s push for self-reliant technology received a big boost on Monday after Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that he is switching to Zoho’s homegrown suite for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The move comes in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to adopt Swadeshi products during the festive season and beyond.

Reacting to the announcement, Sridhar Vembu, Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Zoho, expressed gratitude and promised to continue making India proud.

“Thank you Sir, this is a huge morale boost for our engineers who have worked hard for over two decades to build our product suite. We will make you proud and make our nation proud. Jai Hind,” Vembu posted on X.

A Call for Swadeshi Tech Adoption

Vaishnaw said his decision reflects his support for the Swadeshi movement and urged citizens to join the initiative by embracing Indian products.
“I am moving to Zoho — our own Swadeshi platform for documents, spreadsheets & presentations. I urge all to join PM Narendra Modi’s call for Swadeshi by adopting indigenous products & services,” the minister wrote on X.

This shift underlines the government’s larger “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, which emphasizes building a self-reliant economy by encouraging citizens and businesses to choose Indian-made products.

PM Modi’s Push for Local Goods

The announcement comes after Prime Minister Modi’s recent letter to citizens urging them to support local industries. He emphasized that buying Made-in-India goods directly benefits families, artisans, and workers, while also creating jobs for the youth.

“Every time you buy a product made by our artisans, workers, and industries, you are helping families earn their living and creating job opportunities for our youth,” the Prime Minister said.

The PM also linked this appeal with the recently launched “GST Bachat Utsav”, which aims to reduce household expenses, simplify business operations, and promote growth for farmers, women, MSMEs, and traders.

Zoho: A Swadeshi Tech Success Story

Founded in 1996, Zoho has emerged as a global leader in enterprise software solutions while maintaining its roots firmly in India. With over 100 million users worldwide, the company has often been hailed as a model of how indigenous technology can compete with international giants.

Vaishnaw’s endorsement is seen as a major validation of Zoho’s efforts and could inspire more Indian businesses and individuals to adopt homegrown platforms.

The Road Ahead

With the government openly encouraging the use of Indian products, Zoho’s recognition marks a turning point in India’s digital self-reliance journey. As Vembu highlighted, the achievement reflects the hard work of thousands of Indian engineers who have built world-class products over the past two decades.

This move may also spark a broader shift towards indigenous alternatives in software, hardware, and services, further strengthening the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
