United States Blocks Gaza Ceasefire: 6th UN Veto Sparks Global Outrage

United Nations | September 20,2025 | SKY LINK TIMES

The United States has once again blocked a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This marks the sixth US veto since the war erupted in October 2023, further isolating Washington as 14 other council members voted in favor of the measure.

UN Resolution and US Opposition

The draft resolution, tabled by the 10 elected UNSC members, called for:

1.An immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

2.The lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid deliveries.

3.The release of all hostages held by Hamas and other militant groups.

Despite overwhelming support, the US blocked the resolution, arguing that Israel has agreed to ceasefire terms, but Hamas has refused to release hostages and lay down arms.

> “Hamas is responsible for starting and continuing this war. Israel has accepted proposed terms that would end the war, but Hamas continues to reject them,” U.S. diplomat Morgan Ortagus told the council.

Gaza’s Humanitarian Catastrophe

Before the vote, Denmark’s UN Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen delivered a stark warning:

> “Famine has been confirmed in Gaza – not projected, not declared, confirmed.”

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global hunger monitor, has officially declared famine in Gaza City and nearby areas, with expectations it will spread. At least 64,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed, according to local health authorities. Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza City have intensified the humanitarian crisis, limiting access to food, water, and medical supplies.

US–Israel Relations and Diplomatic Shield

The United States has traditionally shielded Israel at the UN. Just last week, Washington took the unusual step of backing a Security Council statement condemning airstrikes on Qatar, without explicitly naming Israel as the perpetrator. Analysts saw this as a rare moment of friction between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, Thursday’s veto reaffirmed Washington’s alignment with Israel. Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon admitted dissatisfaction with the earlier statement but emphasized the “high level of cooperation” with the US.

Netanyahu is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly next week and will meet President Trump in Washington on September 29.

The War’s Origin and Toll

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli officials. Since then, Israel’s retaliatory operations have devastated, with tens of thousands killed and famine worsening.

The UNSC is set to convene a high-level meeting on Gaza next Tuesday as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly.
