The Union Government has announced that it will distribute 2.5 million free LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) as part of a special Navratri initiative. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made the announcement on Monday, calling it a festival gift that reinforces Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to women’s empowerment.

A Navratri Gift for Women
Speaking about the expansion of the scheme, Minister Puri said each connection will cost the government ₹2,050 and will include a free LPG cylinder, regulator, gas stove, and related equipment.
“With the auspicious beginning of Navratri, the gift of 2.5 million new free PM Ujjwala connections is yet another proof that Prime Minister Narendra Modi honours women just like Goddess Durga. This decision further strengthens our resolve for the respect and empowerment of mothers and sisters,” he posted on X.
Expanding Reach to 106 Million Families
With this fresh addition, the total number of Ujjwala beneficiaries will reach 106 million families across India. Launched in May 2016, the Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to women from poor households. Under Ujjwala 2.0, beneficiaries also receive the first refill and stove free of cost.
The scheme, Puri noted, has transformed kitchens and lives. “It is not just a scheme; it has become a torch of a massive revolution, whose flame has reached every corner of the nation, even remote areas,” he said.
Health, Safety, and Empowerment
According to the Minister, the introduction of LPG connections has brought visible change to millions of households. “No more stinging eyes, no smoke in the breath, and no blisters on the hands. Instead, there is the smile of happiness, good health, and the flavour of love,” he wrote.
The scheme has been widely recognised for reducing health risks associated with traditional cooking fuels like wood and kerosene, while also contributing to environmental sustainability.

Subsidy for Ujjwala Yojana Families
The announcement follows the Union Cabinet’s recent decision to provide a ₹300 subsidy on LPG refills for over 10.33 crore Ujjwala families. With this subsidy, an LPG cylinder is now available for ₹553, a price that Puri said is lower than in many LPG-producing nations.
The minister hailed Ujjwala as both a “symbol of empowerment” and “a source of transformation,” reaffirming its role in improving health, dignity, and opportunities for women across the country.
Looking Ahead
As India marks the festive season of Navratri, the Centre’s decision not only adds millions of new beneficiaries but also highlights its focus on inclusive growth. By extending the benefits of clean cooking fuel, the Ujjwala Yojana continues to empower women and strengthen rural households, making it one of the government’s most impactful welfare schemes.
