In a bid to curb identity fraud and safeguard India’s digital identity system, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has intensified efforts to deactivate Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals. The Ministry of Electronics & IT announced on Wednesday that the initiative is aimed at preserving the accuracy and integrity of the Aadhaar database, a crucial identification platform for residents and NRIs.

Aadhaar numbers are never reassigned once issued, but if not deactivated after death, they may be vulnerable to misuse. To address this, UIDAI has partnered with state governments, the Registrar General of India (RGI), banks, and other ecosystem partners to ensure timely and validated deactivation.
So far, the RGI has shared 1.55 crore Aadhaar-linked death records from 24 States and Union Territories. After validation, UIDAI has deactivated 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers. An additional 6.7 lakh death records from non-CRS states are also being processed.
New myAadhaar Portal Service
On June 9, 2025, UIDAI launched the “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” service on the myAadhaar Portal. This allows family members in 24 CRS-enabled States/UTs to report a death by submitting the deceased’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and demographic details after self-authentication. The process undergoes strict validation before deactivation. UIDAI plans to expand this to all States/UTs.

Additional Verification Initiatives
1.Collecting death records from banks and Aadhaar ecosystem partners.
2.A pilot program to verify Aadhaar holders over 100 years old, in partnership with state governments.
3.Cross-verification with state authorities to confirm the status before deactivation.
UIDAI has urged citizens to promptly report the death of family members on the myAadhaar Portal after obtaining a valid death certificate, stressing the importance of preventing misuse of deceased Aadhaar numbers.
