In a bold statement signaling the future of energy management, the Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) described smart meters as a “scientific leap that empowers consumers” during a press briefing this week.
The MD emphasized that the adoption of smart meters across Tripura is not just a technological upgrade but a transformative move aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and user control in electricity consumption.
“Smart metering is a scientific step forward. It gives the power back to the people — literally. Consumers can now monitor their usage in real-time, avoid billing shocks, and even reduce wastage,” the TSECL MD stated.
Tripura is currently rolling out smart meters across urban and semi-urban regions under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The project aims to replace conventional meters with smart, IoT-enabled devices that offer two-way communication between the consumer and the utility provider.
Officials added that the transition will eliminate manual meter reading, reduce power theft, improve billing accuracy, and help the state monitor demand-supply in real time.
Consumers have already started experiencing the benefits, with many reporting fewer billing disputes and greater visibility into their daily consumption patterns through mobile apps and web portals.
TSECL confirmed that it aims to cover over 2 lakh households by early 2026, bringing smarter, consumer-friendly electricity access to the doorstep.
