Agartala, June 30, 2025:
In a groundbreaking development for public healthcare in Tripura, Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital has successfully completed its third kidney transplant, setting a new benchmark in the state’s medical history.

This landmark procedure was conducted in collaboration with Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Manipur, which has been providing surgical and technical support under a public-private mentorship program.
According to Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, Deputy Superintendent of GBP Hospital, both the donor and recipient are in stable condition and under close medical observation.
This transplant comes after two previously successful surgeries – the first on June 8, 2024, and the second in November 2024. With this third achievement, Tripura’s state-run healthcare system is steadily moving towards self-reliance in complex organ transplant procedures.
The Health Department applauded the collective efforts of the surgical team, anesthesiologists, nephrologists, and nursing staff involved in the procedure.
This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare for citizens and reducing dependence on medical facilities outside the state.
