Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that the state government is working on establishing a dedicated Women’s University to empower female students and strengthen higher education opportunities in the state. The announcement was made during the 64th Teachers’ Day 2025 celebrations at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala on Friday.

A Step Towards Women’s Empowerment
Highlighting the importance of women’s education, CM Saha said the upcoming Women’s University would be a landmark initiative to encourage girls to pursue higher education without barriers.
“We must work for the progress of girls. For that, we have waived fees for girl students in government colleges. Now, our state government is also working to set up a Women’s University to empower them,” Saha stated, according to a press release from the Tripura CMO.
He added that several universities from across India have expressed interest in opening campuses in Tripura, citing the prevailing peace and improved educational atmosphere in the state.
Boost for Higher Education in Tripura
Apart from the Women’s University, the state government has opened three new government colleges and increased MBBS seats, along with establishing new Dental and Nursing colleges. Under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Atmanirbhar Yojana, scooters have also been distributed to female students as an incentive to continue their studies.
CM Saha, who also serves as the state’s Education Minister, emphasized that Tripura is being developed as an emerging education hub in the Northeast.
Reducing DA Gap for Employees
Alongside educational reforms, the Chief Minister also addressed the long-pending demand regarding Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for state employees.
He informed that the government has increased DA and DR by 29 percent, taking the total to 32 percent, and efforts are underway to reduce the remaining gap with Central government employees.
“Earlier, people had to join protest rallies for DA and DR. But we are addressing the issue in a phased manner to bring parity with Central employees,” Saha said.
Tribute to Teachers on Teachers’ Day
During the event, CM Saha lauded teachers for their role in shaping future generations. Comparing teachers to the “roots of a tree,” he said their sacrifices form the foundation for national progress.
He also presented prestigious awards including the Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar Samman, Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukharjee Samman, and the Maharani Tulsibati Samman to distinguished educators and social workers of the state.
What This Means for Tripura
The announcement of a Women’s University in Tripura comes as part of the government’s broader vision to expand educational access, empower women, and make the state an academic hub. If implemented, the project is expected to significantly improve higher education enrollment among women and create new opportunities for research, innovation, and professional growth.
