Tripura is on the brink of a historic milestone, as the northeastern state is poised to become India’s third fully literate state, following Mizoram and Goa. With sustained government efforts, community involvement, and educational campaigns, Tripura has significantly boosted its literacy rate over the past decade.

CM Saha while addressing people expressed that “This is a proud moment for the people of Tripura, today declared the state as “Fully Literate State” in a ceremony held at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, Agartala. Tripura became the third state in the country after Mizoram and Goa to achieve full literacy. The state’s Literacy Rate now stands at 96.5%, increased from 20.24% in 1961. This achievement has been possible following proper implementation of New India Literacy Programme ULLAS -Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society initiative in line with NEP 2020. I congratulate my brothers & sisters of Tripura on this historic occasion.”
📊 What’s Behind the Literacy Push?
The Tripura Government, in collaboration with NGOs, school administrators, and grassroots educators, has been running targeted programs including:
📚 Adult literacy drives in rural and tribal areas
🏫 Universal school enrollment for children aged 6–14 under Right to Education (RTE)
📈 Use of digital learning platforms and “School Cholo Abhiyan” campaigns
👩🏫 Training and deployment of volunteer teachers in backward regions
“Education is not just about numbers but empowering every citizen. Tripura’s literacy mission is a reflection of our commitment to inclusive growth,” said an official from the state’s education department.
🌟 Key Statistics
🔺 Current literacy rate: Over 96% (as per provisional data from the Department of Education)
👥 Women’s literacy rate saw a sharp rise, closing the gender gap
📍 Districts like West Tripura and Unakoti report near-total literacy

🧑🏫 Role of Local Communities
From self-help groups to retired teachers volunteering time, local participation played a major role. Civil society groups conducted weekend classes, mobile libraries, and village-level awareness campaigns — crucial in achieving this feat.
📌 National Impact
Tripura’s achievement is a boost to India’s UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) for Quality Education. Experts say this model can now be replicated in other states lagging behind in literacy, especially in Eastern and Central India.
