Tripura Cracks Down on Underage Driving:
In a decisive move to curb rising road accidents, the Tripura Police has initiated a massive statewide crackdown on underage driving. The enforcement drive targets juveniles below 18 years of age operating motorised vehicles — a violation the authorities describe as a “serious threat to public safety.”

The announcement came through an official press release issued by the Tripura Police, outlining strict measures under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, particularly Section 199A, which prohibits minors from driving any motorised vehicle.

Heavy Penalties Under Section 199A
The police highlighted that the amended provisions of the Act impose severe consequences not only on juveniles but also on the guardians or vehicle owners who allow such violations.
According to the statement:
1.Driving a motorised vehicle under 18 is illegal.
2.Guardians or vehicle owners permitting minors to drive may face a fine of ₹25,000.
3.Adults responsible could face imprisonment of up to three years.
4.The vehicle’s registration may be cancelled for one year.
5.Juveniles caught driving will be barred from obtaining a driving licence until the age of 25.
Authorities said these penalties reflect the seriousness of the offence, given the increasing number of road accidents involving underage riders across the state.
Enforcement Drive Across Tripura
The police have begun checks in urban and rural areas, particularly targeting hotspots known for youth riding two-wheelers without supervision.
Officials emphasised that minors driving motorcycles, scooters, or cars often lack the maturity, experience, and training required to handle traffic conditions, leading to fatal accidents.
A senior police officer said the campaign is designed not just to punish offenders but also to raise awareness about responsible guardianship.

Appeal to Parents and Guardians
Tripura Police urged all parents and guardians to remain vigilant and ensure minors do not operate any motorised vehicle under any circumstances.
“Compliance is essential for maintaining road safety across the state,” the press release stated. Parents were reminded that allowing a minor to drive is not only dangerous but now carries substantial legal consequences.
A Step Toward Safer Roads
With rising accident statistics and increasing cases of unsupervised teenage riding, the state government and police have taken a strict stand. The crackdown aims to instil discipline among young citizens and reinforce the importance of road safety norms.
The initiative is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with police personnel conducting routine and surprise checks to ensure adherence.
